We have been lucky enough to work with the very talented photographer Jess for most of our campaigns. Being approached by her partner Matt to design her engagement ring was such an honour and made extra special by using heirloom gemstones from Jess’ family.

Being two very creative individuals, Matt knew that he wanted to create a unique signet ring that would reflect Jess’ style and personality. This beautiful couple is clearly very connected, as in Jess’ words –  ‘I love the ring every single day’

How did you meet?
Jess – We met on a rooftop. Matt booked me for a photoshoot and it was the last job of the year for both of us, on December 20, 2018. After a long, uneventful run on the dating platforms it was so nice to meet each other the good old fashioned way. And completely by surprise!

Where was your first date?
Both – On the way to our first dinner together ( post shoot ) we drove past the NGV, and Escher was being showcased. We both agreed that we needed to go and that became our first date, which took place 2 days later! We saw the most incredible art then had a cute late afternoon picnic in the botanical gardens after and awesome chats, and it was pretty much perfect.

What was the biggest thing that surprised you about your partner?
Matt – Jess‘s enthusiasm for art and creativity, which lead me into a much deeper place of creative consideration. and her endless amount of friends lol

Jess – How alike and aligned we are. I’m a pretty particular person with my tastes and random ways of doing things, and Matt from the start always met me with almost perfect agreement. I know how this sounds.. like it’s too good to be true right! Of course we have random disagreements, but we are so similar that things are just – easy – for the most part. I literally did not think this could exist for someone as ‘specific’ as I am.

What were your first impressions of each other?
Matt – We were both dressed in exactly the same outfit.. black Dickies, black tee, black outer jacket, and trainers. Aesthetically it had already aligned.. Value alignment had been reached, and it was a sudden turn to the after work dinner!

Jess – I thought he was really lovely and interesting to talk to. It was a fun few hours spent on the job pretty casually, and then later when we decided to go for dinner and really had a chance to chat, I was pretty surprised when Matt kept taking the words right out of my mouth. We realised we had so much in common in the way we both saw the world and suddenly it had become what felt like a date..it was all feeling pretty strange and amazing.

Why did you decide on a hand crafted ring?
Matt – Being that Jess had photographed a few TLOS collections, and understanding her love for The Line of Sun it became a no brainer for me. The opportunity to have this special piece crafted by someone that knew Jess personally added so much value to the ring!
Can you tell us a bit about the journey of collaborating on a bespoke ring and/or why you chose the specific design?
Matt – I wanted the ring to be current in design and non-traditional, in a true reflection of Jess. Whilst looking through The Line of Sun collection, I collated three rings that reflected Jess’ style which became the design direction. I also had two special family rings from Jess’ family that were to be repurposed into this ring. A blue ceylon sapphire from her Grandmother, a diamond from her Mother’s ring, and a new diamond to represent myself.
