Our story

Inspired by historical artifacts and natural forms,  Alice Smith, jeweller and founder of The Line of Sun, works with the ancient technique of lost wax casting – a process whereby each piece is hand carved from wax, before being cast in precious metals and polished to finish the piece. Every detail, setting and texture is crafted with intention, creating truly bespoke pieces that reflect your personal stories.

Echoes of the Past

Careful consideration goes into each and every design, taking great inspiration from the rich history of jewellery making. We look to works of the deep past to guide our shapes and textures and are informed by the tradition of creating pieces that celebrate the makers mark.

Lost Wax Process

Our pieces are hand sculpted using the ancient technique of lost wax casting – a process whereby each piece is carved in wax before being cast in precious metals and then sanded and polished to finish off the piece. This practice allows for a great deal of texture to be created to form organic objects that will become modern heirlooms. This practice has been employed for many a Millenia - a craft which connects us to a lineage artists from the deep past.

The historic lost wax sculpture cast in brass. Estimated to be forged somewhere between 2300–1750 BC in the Indus Valley civilisation in what is now modern day Pakistan.  This piece can be found in the National Museum of New Delhi.

Ethics and Materials

Each and every piece is designed & made in our Melbourne studio using 100% recycled metals and ethically sourced gemstones.

With minimising waste as an important focus - every scrap of metal is saved, then melted down to form new creations.
